Mudiyettu is a ritualistic dance-drama performed in
Bhadrakali temples in South and Central
Kerala. 'Mudiyettu' literally means the placing of crown on the head. It is the story of the war between Bhadrakali and two notorious asuras - Daarikan and Daanavendran. Based on the Puranic story of Darikavadham, it is performed by ambalavaasis (people who serve in the temple). Maarars and Kurups are the special participants in Mudiyettu. Mudiyettu is presented without much of 'mudras,' facemasks and facial expressions, but with facial make-ups and 'chutti' (artwork done on face with rice paste). It is performed between the months of
Vrischikam and
Meenam (November-March).
