Koothambalam

Performing Stage of Koothu

Koothambalam is the place where Koothu is performed. It is a stage constructed within the premises of a temple. Normally, the stage is around 16 m long and 12 m broad with a 4 m square platform supported by pillars in the center. During the dance, the stage is decorated with fruit-bearing plantains, bunches of tender coconuts and festooned with fronds of the coconut palm. A ‘Para (vessel)’, filled with paddy is placed on the stage. A tall oil lamp made of brass is used for lighting. The stage will also have the mizhavu, a percussion instrument accompanying Koothu, placed within a railed enclosure, with a high seat for the drummer.

The koothambalams in the Vadakkunnathan temple at Thrissur and Irinjalakkuda temple are famous, where Koothu is being conducted to this day.
