Kumbakonam is picturesquely located between the rivers
Cauvery and Arasalar in
Thanjavur District.
Thanjavur is around 20 km south-west.
The fame of Kumbakonam rests in its temples. It was also the capital of the Chola dynasty during the medieval period.
Kumbeswarar and Sarangapani temples are the prime attractions. The temples of Sri Abhimugheswarar, Kasi Vishwanathar, Nageswaran, and Ramaswamy are the other temples. Kumbakonam houses a temple dedicated to
Brahma, which is very rare. There are also several other minor temples in and around Kumbakonam. The Mahamaham tank is a major draw. It is also famous for the Mahamaham festival that is celebrated once in 12 years.
The nearest airport is at Tiruchirapalli, 95 km away. Kumbakonam Railway Station is one of the main railheads in the district. It is well linked by road to Thanjavur, Chennai and Madurai.
