Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary



Located about 95 km away from Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad District, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary adjoins the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu.

It is bisected by a tract of cultivated land with one part in Kozhikode District and the other in Kannur District. Established in 1973, it is an integral part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve.

The landscape of the Wayanad Sanctuary is gently undulating, with occasional hillocks. The highest peak is Karottimala(1158 m). The flora mainly comprises moist deciduous forests, with evergreen forests on the higher ridges. Teak, bamboo and eucalyptus are also commonly found. The park is home to tiger, leopard, panther, sloth bear, wild dog, jackal, elephant, various kinds of deer, giant squirrel, peacock, babblers, cuckoos, owl, wood pecker and jungle fowl.

The best time to visit is June to October. Good roads connect the sanctuary with Kozhikode, Mysore and Ooty. The nearest airport is Calicut Airport, and the nearest railway station is at Kozhikode, 97 km from Sulthan Bathery.
