Mappila Pattukal are the folk songs of the Muslim community of
Kerala. The tradition of Mappila Pattukal is believed to be more than 700 years old. These songs reflect the day-to-day life of the community.
Arabic and Malayalam language are fused together in these songs. It is sung during rituals and occasions like marriage and are often accompanied with dances. Love, heroism and devotion to God are the basic sentiments that are expressed.
Earlier songs were mostly of devotional nature. They were highly imaginative and down to earth. With the advance of time, new styles were added to it.
