Thrikodithanam

Thrikkodithanam

Thrikodithanam, also spelt Thrikkodithanam, is a village in Kottayam District of Kerala. The place has great historical importance as it was well-known religious center in the past. It was the capital of a prosperous kingdom called Nanrulainattu (Land of Farmers). Thrikodithanam lies on Changanacherry-Karukachal road, about 2 km north-east of Changanacherry. There is a story behind the origin of name 'Thrikodithanam'. The village was once a major center for culture, arts, erudition and learning. The institutes here taught religious text in 'Khadikas' or sections, and were known as Khadika Sthanam. The presence of the famous Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Kshetram lent the prefix of respect 'Thiru' to the Khadika Sthanam. Thus it became Thiru-Khadika-Sthanam. Later this name shrank to form Thrikodithanam. Kunnumpuram is the main place in this village. Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Kshetram situated here is one of the five Pancha-Pandava temples in Kerala. Mahadev Temple at Aaramala, Sri Subramanian Temple, Dharma Shasta Temple, Mundakkal Kavu Devi Temple and Sri Guruguhanandapuram Temple are other attractions. Thrikodithanam is around 25 km south-east of Kottayam. Regular buses are available from Changanacherry Bus Station. The nearest railhead is Changanacherry Railway Station.
