Azhutha is a sacred place near
Peermade in
Idukki District. Azhutha River, a tributary of Pampa, is about 2 km from Kalaketti near Azhutha. The steep Azhutha hill is famous for its strenuous track. The scaling of this steep mount is a formidable challenge.
Legend tells that the battle between Mahishi and Lord Ayyappa took place on the banks of Azhutha. After killing Mahishi, the lord threw the dead body into a nearby place called
Kallidumkunnu.
Road route is only up to Azhutha and beyond this spot it is thick forest. It is a camping area during night for pilgrims on the way to Sabarimala. A ceremony called Aazhi puja is performed here by the devotees. A dip in Azhutha river’s cool and placid waters makes the pilgrims refreshed. While bathing in the river every devotee picks up the first piece of stone he gets hold of from the river-bed. This stone is given as an offering at Kallidumkunnu on their way to Sabarimala.
