Nammalwar was a saint poet, born near present day
Tirunelveli, TamilNadu, in the 9th century AD. A spiritual genius since childhood, Nammalwar has composed the
Tamil version of the 4
Vedas. Nammalwar was also called Sadagopan.
He sat under a tree and meditated for 16 years without speaking. Madura Kavi, a scholar, got Nammalwar to speak and became his disciple. Nammalwar's works are, 'Thiruviruttam,' 'Thiruasariyam,' 'Periya Tiruvandadi,' and 'Thiruvaimozhi.' He died at the age of 35.
