Mandya, the administrative headquarters of
Mandya District, is a major center for commerce and trade in
Karnataka. The city derived its name from a saint named Mandvya, who lived here in ancient times.
Mandya assumes prominence due to the presence of the Mandya sugar factory, which is one of the biggest in India. Mandya is 40 km northeast of Mysore.
Tourist attractions in and around the city include Maddur (14 km), Kokrebellur Bird Sanctuary (20 km), Mandya Jain Temple and Srirangapatna. The annual car festival held in the Janardhanaswami Temple here draws a large number of devotees.
Mandya Railway Station is on the Mysore-Bangalore line.
