Nanjundeswara Temple




Nanjundeswara Temple is an ancient shrine, located on the right bank of the Kapila River, in Mysore District of Karnataka. Nanjangud, where this shrine is situated, takes its name from Nanjundeswara Temple.

The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva under the name of 'Nanjundeswara'. The images of Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu, Lord Muruga, Goddess Durga and Sarada are seen inside the temple.

Nanjundeswara Temple conforms to the Dravidian style architecture. It has an imposing shikhara and an array of sculptural work depicting mythological scenes.

Legend has it that Lord Parasurama worshipped at this temple. A shrine dedicated to Parasurama is situated nearby.

Nanjangud is about 23 km south of Mysore. Nanjangud Town Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
