Khanapur

Bordered by Maharashtra, Goa and Uttara Kannada District, Khanapur in Belgaum District has many natural resources. Spread over an area of nearly 90,000 hectares, the place boasts thick evergreen forests and rock formations, traversed by rivers like Malaprabha, Markandeya and Mahadayi and many streams. The forest is rich in teak, rose-wood, matti and kindal and a wide range of wildlife. Birds like black vulture and rare species of bats are more in number here than anywhere else in the state. The rock formations called ‘dharwar’ formations, massive granite-gneiss hills composed of round boulders, and lime-stone beds found here are awesome. The place is also known for its large sized containers and jars for storage and preservation. Situated 28 km from Belgaum, it is well connected by road and rail.
