Mahabubnagar, formerly known as 'Rukmammapeta' and 'Palamooru', is the administrative headquarters of
Mahabubnagar District. It is located 96 km to the southwest of
Hyderabad.
The city is named after Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Asaf Jah VI, who was the Nizam of Hyderabad from 1869-1911 AD. It has been the capital of Mahabubnagar District since 1883. Cotton ginning, oilseed and rice milling form the principal industry of the town.
Places of tourist interest include mosques and dargahs of Bagamaru Saheb, Syed Abdul Khader Saheb, Majoot Mardan Ali Shah Saheb and Pillalamari.
Mahabubnagar is a major railhead on the Secunderabad-Dronachellam section of the
South Central Railway. Regular buses connect the town with Kurnool and other places in the state. Nearest airport is at Hyderabad.
