Yaksha is a male guardian spirit in Indian mythology. The Yakshas are said to be appointed by
Lord Indra to guard the treasures hidden in earth or inside the roots of trees. Some mythologies even refer to them as a symbol of fertility and prosperity. A Yaksha’s female counterpart is known as
Yakshi.
Yakshas are often given the status of a semi-god and are worshipped as the guardian deities of cities, lakes or wells. Lord Kubera is considered as the chief among the Yakshas.
