Gurupura Tibetan Carpets

Gurupura, a village in Mysore District of Karnataka, is home to people of Tibetan origin. These people have a rich tradition of weaving oriental carpets. These carpets boast rich colors and bold designs. These carpets are used as seat or bed cover and as wall hangings.

The Gurupura Tibetan carpets are woven from pure Punjabi wool. They are thick and durable, said to last up to 100 years with proper care. The designs mostly have Buddhist influence. The motifs include the Dragon, a representation of divine wisdom; the lotus, a symbol of regeneration, which is used in the centre and corners; the Swastika, an evolution symbol, is portrayed along with prayer objects like flags, ribbons and boxes. The patterns on the carpets are woven in a raised manner, giving them a three dimensional look.
