Gangubai Hangal, a gifted as well as the senior-most Hindustani classical vocalist, was born in Hangal, north
Karnataka, in 1913. She was born in a family of musicians; her mother, Amambai, was a renowned Carnatic classical vocalist. Gangubai became a distinguished singer under the guidance of Sawai Gandharva. She was honored with a number of prestigious awards such as Padma Bhushan and
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
