Durga Temple is a highly revered shrine situated at
Aihole, in
Karnataka. This ancient 7th century temple situated inside the fort in Aihole is noted for its magnificent semi-circular apse, elevated plinth and the gallery that encircles the sanctum. With its apsidal end, the temple seems to be a Hindu adaptation of the Buddhist chaitya (hall).
The temple features intricate carvings from Hindu mythology including the fascinate carvings of Chamundi Devi trampling the buffalo demon; Narasimha, Ardhanariswara and Mahishasuramardini.
The temple derives its name from ‘Durgadagudi’ which literally means 'temple near the fort'.
