Sringeri

Sringeri is a holy town situated on the banks of Tunga River, 90 km west of Chikmagalur, in Karnataka. It is believed that the town is named after the great saint Rishyasringa, who figures in the epic Ramayana as the chief priest at the great sacrifice of King Dashrath.

Sringeri is famous for Sri Sarada Samsthanam, established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 7th century. The 14th century Vidyashankara temple, situated in a scenic spot, along the river, is another point of attraction. The temple is noted for its architectural splendor that exemplifies the artistic transition from Hoysala to Vijayanagar style. Sirimane falls, located at Kigga, 10 km from Sringeri is worth visiting.

Closest airport is at Mangalore (190 km). Sringeri is connected by regular bus services with Bangalore, Mangalore and Chikmagalur. Nearest railhead is Shimoga.
