Sera IMI House is a house group in the Sera Je College of Sera Je Monastery in
Karnataka. It is a place for Western and Asian monks to live and study the traditional style of Tibetan Buddhism at Sera Je Monastery. Located in a beautiful rural hill area to the west of
Mysore, it is a part of the International Mahayana Institute (IMI), the Sangha division of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT).
The program (Geshe Degree) includes a 19 year course of the study of the Buddhist sutras along with daily practices. The monks receive complete knowledge in the teachings and practices of Buddhism as it is described within the Tibetan Geluk tradition, newest of the four great traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The newly graduated monk continues with the study of tantra to carry out retreat or to teach and translate. Debating classes are also conducted.
Sera IMI House is constructed in a traditional monastic cloister style. There are 15 furnished single rooms, a self contained teacher's unit, a meditation room, a library, a kitchen/dining room, and two toilet/bathroom blocks. Its library houses a wide collection of Buddhist and related books in English and Tibetan.
