Gulbarga is situated in the north-eastern part of
Karnataka. Gulbarga was known as 'Kalburgt' which means 'stony land' in
Kannada. It was a part of the ancient
Chalukyan kingdom of
Badami. Languages spoken are Kannada and English. Major crops include bajra,
sugarcane, jowar, groundnut, sunflower, sesame, castor, black gram, wheat, cotton, ragi, Bengal gram, and linseed. The
Krishna and Bhima are the main rivers. Jevargi is an important religious place situated on the banks of the Bhima.
Main attractions are Gulbarga Fort, Sharana Basveshwara Temple, and Sri Ram Mandir.
Sri Kshetra Gangapur, the famous pilgrimage center of God Sri Sadguru Dattarya, is very close to Gulbarga. Thousands of pilgrims visit Gulbarga during the annual festival held at the tomb of Khwaja Bande Nawaz to commemorate his death anniversary. Best time to visit Gulbarga is between October and March.
