Mahamaya Temple

Mahamaya is one of the ancient temples in Hapamuni, a scenic hamlet 12 km from Ghaghra. The temple is on the Gumla–Lohardaga Road.

The temple was built by Gajghat Ray, the 22nd king of Naga dynasty. Gajghat Ray ruled from AD 869 to 905, and later he handed over this shrine to Guru Harinath, who was a Rashtrakuta Brahmin.

In 1391, an image of Lord Vishnu was installed here by Raja Shivdas Karn. It is said that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu chose this way during his visit to Mathura from Jagannath Puri in 1485.

As per Ranchi Gazetteer, this temple was destroyed by some tribal people during the Kolh uprising against the Diku.

Ghaghara is around 30 km north of Gumla.
