Mahadev Kona, a small hamlet on the banks of South Koyal River, is situated about 95 km south-west of
Ranchi. It is near to
Gumla and is on the Ranchi–
Simdega road via Khunti.
The place is dotted with Shivlings. According to legend, a temple of Lord Shiva existed here, which was constructed before the Mahabharat period. The ruins of this temple can be still found here. It is said that the Magadh Emperor, who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, ruled this region for a long time.
In addition to the ancient Durga Mandir at Brahmin Tola, the village is famous for Murhar Chandi Temple. Murhar Pahar and Murhar Manda cave are the other specialties. Murhar Manda acts as an underground passage to
Palkot.
Bhutkuria Tongri Cave, Jalkund, remains of queen Lukpail and the ruins of old palace are nearby.
The strong influence of Shaivism and Oriyan culture is prevalent in this area.
