The full moon day of
Shravana called the Shravana Poornima is considered to be an auspicious day by the Kashmiri Pundits. The full moon day of Shravana is dedicated to
Lord Shiva.
It is during Shravana Poornima that the pilgrimage to Swami Amarnath cave is undertaken, for the glimpse of the ice-linga, which waxes and wanes along with the growth and decline of the moon. 'Partheshwaras' are made on this day. 'Partheswaras' are made of holy clay and mercury for pujas by the pundits. They are later immersed in the river in the evening. Fasting is observed on this day. Fasting is an essential aspect of the spirituality of a Pundit. Shravan Poornima is celebrated as Rakshabandhan or Rakhi in other parts of the country.
