Bibhutibhushan Banerjee (1899-1950) was a prolific Bengali writer who became renowned through his first novel Pather Panchali. He wrote both novels and short stories. Aparajita, Dristipradeep, Adarsa Hindu Hotel, Aaranyak, are his other popular works. Aaranyak depicts his love of nature and Aparajita portrays his life-story. Umarani is one of his best known short stories.
