Situated at an altitude of 5,160 ft above mean sea level, Zewan is a beautiful town in
Srinagar District. This town, 10 km to the east of
Srinagar, is a place of great archeological importance. Remains of a large number of sea animals, sea fishes and skeletons in fossilized form found at Zewan testify to the fact that this land was once under the sea.
According to Hindu mythology, it was a place of high rise monuments and had a pool filled with pure water sacred to Takshak - the Lord of Snakes.
During British rule, this place was a favorite summer destination for the British and remnants of three huts are still here.
Zewan is linked with Srinagar by road, and is easily accessible through air and road from other major Indian cities and states.
