Wanla Monastery is located in Wanla, a small town to the south-east of Yungdrung Gompa, in
Leh District of
Jammu and Kashmir. Yungdrung Gompa, built on a rock, is 125 km west of
Leh, on the Leh-
Srinagar Highway.
Wanla Monastery was constructed during the time of Lama Rinchen Zangpo, in 1000 AD. The chief attraction here is the image of the 11 headed Mahakaruna, which stands to a height of more than two storeys. The walls are graced with the paintings of Buddha, Bodhisattvas and mandalas. A sacred image of Chovo-je-Paldan Atisha can also be seen here.
