Thiksey is a village located 25 km south of
Leh. This beautiful village is on the eastern banks of the
Indus River, on a steep rugged rock overlooking the plains.
The Thiksey monastery, belonging to the 15th century, is the chief tourist attraction. Thiksey Festival, the two-day festival in the Thiksey monastery of Ladakh is also celebrated in a grand manner. Thiksey, famous for one of the largest and architecturally most impressive gompas, houses several temples which contain images, stupas and wall paintings of the Buddha. One among them is the Maitreya Temple. A monastic school and an organization for social reforms also function here.
Thiksey can be approached from Ladakh by road. The nearest airport is Leh Airport.
