Shakar is a small village of the western
Kargil District of
Jammu and Kashmir. It is located at an altitude of 11,233 ft above sea level and is just 2 km from
Shakardo. Lumsu in the north,
Kharbudu in the north,
Chomortan in the east and Hagnis in the south are the neighboring places.
Shakar is of great importance in the historical records and is exclusively inhabited by Muslims. The most highly developed versions of Kesar Saga, the Tibetan national epic, is said to have been found from here.
Shakar can be approached easily from Kargil, which lies to the west. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi Railway Station, which is on the Jammu – Pathankot line.
