Mulbekh Chamba is a 9-metre high rock sculpture of
Maitreya Buddha of future ages. It is located at
Mulbekh in
Kargil District of
Jammu and Kashmir.
Its execution combines esoteric Shaivite symbolism and early Buddhist art. The statue, carved on a hillside in the Suru Valley, belongs to 9th century. This imposing sculpture depicts a standing Bodhisattva with 4 arms and a headdress. It is adorned with jewels. Evidences reveal that this sculpture was made when Kashmiri Buddhist missionaries came traveling east of the Himalayas.
