Salt Lake Valley, perched at an altitude of 5000 m, is one of the widest open areas in
Rupshu, the highest inhabited part of the
Changthang plateau. It is situated in
Leh District of
Jammu and Kashmir.
Spread over an area of about 140 sq km, the valley’s main settlement is Thuggi. The fresh water Panluk Lake (about 2 sq km) and the salt-water Tsokar Lake (about 10 sq km) are two major attractions here. Impure salt deposited on the northern shore of Tsokar Lake is gathered by Changpas and used as barter to obtain goods from other parts of Ladakh.
Salt Lake Valley can be approached from Leh across the Tanglang La Pass.
