Dal Lake, in
Srinagar District,
Jammu and Kashmir, is host to world famous Shikaras and Houseboats. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the State and has been eulogised by poets several times over.
The lake is 8 km long and 4 km wide, spread over an area of 26 sq km. It is divided into four parts by four causeways. There are a few
islands in the western part of the lake.
Shikara riding, houseboating, swimming, kayaking and canoeing, water surfing, and angling (with licence) are the possible activities here. Jammu, 300 km from the Dal, is the nearest railhead.
