Mashro Gompa
Established in the first half of the 16th century, Mashro Gompa which is also known as Matho Monastery is situated on the banks of the Indus River across Thikse. This Gompa has a collection of very old and beautiful tangkas, some in the form of 'mandalas'. The annual festival of oracles is held during March and this festival is an important event in the Ladakhi calendar. During this festival, young monks - chosen as oracles - undergo meditation for a long period; they fast for purification and to gain spiritual strength. They also perform astonishing feats with swords and knives, cavorting blindfolded along narrow parapets.
