Long-tailed Shrike (Lanius schach) is a yellowish bird with a black hood and white edged black wings. It is about 25 cm in length. The forehead, mask, wings and tail of adult birds are black in color with a white wing spot. The bill is visibly thick and the blackish tail rather narrow and long.
Long-tailed Shrike inhabits open spaces, grassland, scrub, tea and clove plantations and other open areas. It sits on a low perch and makes darting sallies on flying insects, or more commonly pounces on grasshoppers and beetles on the ground.
It can be spotted in Overa Wildlife Sanctuary, Jammu and Kashmir.
