Spituk Monastery is situated on the hill top near the river
Indus, about 18 km from
Leh, in
Jammu and Kashmir. Founded in the 11th century, it was named Spituk by Rinchen Zangpo - a translator who visit this place.
Spituk Monastery houses a wide collection of ancient masks, antique arms, icons and numerous Thangkas. The annual festival Spituk Gustor is celebrated here amid much pomp and splendor.
The Mahakal Temple, situated in the hill top, is another spot worth visiting.
The nearest airport is at Leh. For local transport, taxis and jeeps are available from Leh.
