Sankar Gompa

Sankar is a modern gompa, situated just 3 km from Leh, in Jammu and Kashmir. It serves as the residence of the head priest - Kushak Bakula and is closely associated with the Spituk Monastery.

Sankar Gompa is noted for its attractive construction – a right mix of old world charm and contemporary modernity. A series of steps extends to the Du-Khang, the main prayer hall. The walls of prayer hall are exquisitely garnished with beautiful murals. Above the main prayer hall stands Tara, the gompa's principal deity. The deity stands as ‘Dukkar’, a 1,000 armed form with equal number of heads and is also known as ‘Lady of the White Parasol’. The gompa has an outstanding collection of miniature statues of pure gold and a number of exciting paintings. A library is also encompassed in the monastery.

Sankar Gompa is open to the public daily from 7:00 to 10:00 hrs and 17:00 to 19:00 hrs.
