Krimchi Temples

Krimchi Temples, three of the oldest temples of Jammu and Kashmir, are situated at Krimchi in Udhampur District. Krimchi is about 10 km north-west of Udhampur.

These three temples stand in a row facing east on a stone complex and a small stream flows nearby. They are noted for fine carvings and sculptures. The architecture of the temples shows distinct Greek (Hellenic) influences. One of the temples is in ruins. The temples resemble the shape of Baij Nath and Lingaraj Temple at Bhubaneswar in Orissa. The construction of these temples was done using the stone structures and massive pillars.

The main temple is around 50 feet high. The porch of this temple resembles the ancient stone temples of Kashmir. The sculptures of the deities include that of Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Vishnu. From the evidences, it is believed that the temples might have been constructed by the Kushan ruler on way to Kashmir during the 9th century.

Regular bus service connects Krimchi with Srinagar, Jammu and Udhampur. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi Railway Station.
