Kalakote is the taluk headquarters of
Rajouri District in
Jammu and Kashmir. One of the upcoming towns in the district, it comprises of 68 villages. This mountainous town lies in between Koteranka and
Sunderbani.
Agriculture and allied activities are main occupation of the people. Coal is the main resource of the town. In early 50’s, a Thermal Power Station was established here keeping in view the available coal resources. Currently, the power station is in closed state, because the coal available at site was not suitable for the project.
The healthy climate, dense wood and enchanting view of surrounding hill make Kalakote a favorite tourist spot.
Tatapani Spring is a major draw here. The bathing in the spring water is believed to cure body pains and skin diseases. Manma Mata Temple, an ancient shrine dedicated to Mata Devi, is situated 6 km away.
Regular buses and shared taxis connect Kalakote with Rajouri (35 km south-east), which is about 157 km from Jammu and about 89 km north of Poonch.
