Dogra Tribe is to be mainly found in
Jammu and Kashmir, settled between the
Ravi and
Chenab rivers. Dogras are considered to be the descendent of Aryan stock.
Dogras are divided into many castes and sects. They speak Dogri language - a mixture of Sanskrit, Punjabi and Persian. Agriculture is the main occupation. Rice, wheat and pulses are their staple food.
The tribe has distinct cultural heritage and unique historical background. They have made remarkable achievements as soldiers and builders of temples and forts. Dogras have also made a notable contribution to the growth of painting in India.
Men wear a short coat or a flowing shirt with pyjamas. The turban on their head is generally complemented by kamarband at the waist. Women wear tight-fitting bodice or jumpers over pyjamas with a shawl or dupatta thrown over the head.
The people of Dogras tribe are deeply attached to their land. Much of their folklore (myths and legends) relates to their shrines. Religion has also greatly influenced the mass entertainment of the people in the form of 'Ras' dances.
Dogras are also known by several other names such as Dogri Tribe, Dogari, Dogri-Kangri, Dogaryali, Dogari Jammu, Dogari Pahari, Tokkaru, Dogri-Kangra and Dogri Pahari.
