Habba Kadal

Habba Kadal is one of the nine wooden bridges in Srinagar. Downstream from the Badshah Bridge, the Jhelum River enters the old city of Srinagar where the Habba Kadal lies. The overpass was originally built by Habib Shah, the then ruler of Kashmir in the year 1551.

Habba Kadal was affected by the flood of 1893. The bridge is of historical importance as it served as a platform for the freedom movement launched by Kashmiris to end the Dogra rule. The newly constructed bridge is few meters upstream of the old wooden bridge of the same name. It was inaugurated by Farooq Abdullah, the then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, on January 14, 2001.

The new secretariat building and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Park are nearby. The Apple Canal joins the Jhelum on the right side. The Kota Canal leaves the Jhelum between the Amira Kadal and the Habba Kadal.
