Gilgit River, an important tributary of the
Indus River, originates from a glacier near the extreme north-western boundary of the
Himalayas in
Ladakh of
Jammu and Kashmir.
Initially, it meanders towards south, and then towards east and merges with the Indus at Bunji, the main human settlement along this river. The whole catchment area of the Gilgit River is bleak and desolate.
The major tributaries of the river are the Ghizar River and the Hunza River. Gilgit River becomes wider near the confluence with the Ghizar River.
