Vitasta River is a major tributary of
Jhelum River. It originates from Nila Kund, also called Vitastatru (Vetha-Vatur). This river is sacred to Hindus and is considered to be the remover of all sins.
The river has a zigzag course and wends its way through the Vitasta Valley. From Khanabal to Baramulla, its length is 164 km. It is prone to floods in rainy season and gets alluvial soil with it.
On its way between the source and Khanabal, the Vitasta is joined by streams known as Sandrin, Brang and Arpal, bringing water from Kother, Kokernag Spring and Acchabal respectively. When the river leaves the valley at Baramulla, it is called Kashur Darya. After merging with Kishenganga, it is known as Jhelum.
