Changthang, one of the least developed Tibetan settlements in India, is located in
Leh District of
Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the most remote areas in
Ladakh region. This plain with a total area of 25,000 sq m comprises 9 clusters of villages and is at a distance of about 300 km from
Leh.
Being a cold arid region of the western Himalayas, the temperature at Changthang falls even below zero degree during the winter months. These dry, cold rangelands are non-arable and limited in their production capacity. The settlers of this place are nomadic groups of traditional herders who move with their animals.
Changthang is famous for the sulphar springs, the black-necked crane and the snow leopard. Another attraction is the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.
