Buniar Temple

Buniar Temple is an ancient temple that belongs to the late medieval era. Located in the Jhelum Valley road at Buniar, this is the only one temple built in granite stone of whitish color. Due to age and neglect, now the shrine is more or less in a dilapidated state.

The temple with a double-chambered gateway facing both sides has lintels of the closed arches. The flights of steps on the eastern and western sides respectively form the entrance and exit. The original image, which seems to have been of Lord Vishnu, is now replaced by a small shivling.

The stones used for the ceilings were known as Kanait locally, which are similar to Kanjur of Taxilla. The evidences on a Sarada inscription of Ramadeva reveals about the description of the stone structures. It is by far the best preserved of all the larger Kashmir temples.

Buniar Temple is about 2 miles from Rampur near Baramulla. The nearest railway station is at Jammu.
