Viceregal Lodge located in
Shimla was the summer residence of the British Viceroys and the President of India. Now it houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. Completed in 1888, this colonial structure in Scottish Baronial style was where the British made their major decisions on India.
Viceregal Lodge is a six storied building which is surrounded by beautiful lawns. It is said that every brick needed for its construction was carried by the mules. In addition to the beautiful lawns, it also has a botanical garden and a small cafe. Opposite to its entrance is the Himalayan Aviary, where one can sight monal pheasants, the national bird of Himachal Pradesh.
The Viceregal Lodge is located 2 km west of
Himachal State Museum and Library. Admission fee is Rs 10. During winter the Viceregal lodge is open from 0900 hrs to 1700 hrs and in summer from 0900 hrs to 1900 hrs.
