Naggar on the left bank of the
Beas River is a prominent town of
Kullu District in
Himachal Pradesh. Founded by Raja Visudhpal, it was the capital of Kullu for about 1,460 years until the capital was transferred to
Sultanpur by Jagat Singh. Several legends are associated with this town.
Naggar is a popular tourist spot, and offers the commanding views of the surroundings especially of the north-west of the valley. Splendid deodars, sanctified mountains, waterfalls and snow covered ranges encircle the town. The upper Beas region is surrounded by glaciers and the town is spread like a leaf of pipal tree unfolded on the slope of Han peak, which is at an altitude varying from 13,500 to 14,500 ft above the sea level.
The places of interest include Roerich Art Gallery and museums housing traditional artifacts. Apart from this, a number of temples can be visited, significant being
Tripura Sundari Temple and
Gauri Shankar Temple. The Chanderkhani Pass, which leads to the Malana valley, is nearby. Kullu Dussehra, a popular festival celebrated here, attracts a large number of people.
Naggar has excellent opportunities for enjoying activities such as fishing, trekking and white water rafting. There are numerous shops in the vicinity, from where shawls, local tweeds, natural oil and caps can be bought. Superb accommodation facilities are available in Naggar Castle, which is a heritage property.
Naggar has good road communication, and is 25 km north-east of Kullu and 21 km south-east of Manali. Bus services are available from here. The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport.
