Bhimkali Temple

Bhimkali, famous for Himalayan architecture, is an ancient temple located amid snow-clad mountains in Sarahan of Shimla District. Built during the 12th century and rebuilt in the 1920s, this temple dedicated to Bhimakali (Durga) is a blend of Hindu and Buddhist styles.

Inside the holy place, the main statue is surrounded by the images of Parvati, Buddha and Anupama. Multi-tiered sanctuary towers, golden spires, a pair of silver doors and a collection of Buddhist bronzes are the distinctive features. Mythological representations made during the time of Raja Shamsher Singh of 19th century can also be found. The Lanka Vir Temple, where human sacrifices were performed until the 19th century, is to the right of the courtyard.

The best time to visit is from mid-April to July and September and October. The nearest airport is at Shimla, about 184 km from Sarahan. Buses ply regularly between Shimla and Sarahan.
