Baijnath Shiva Temple

Baijnath Shiva Temple is an ancient shrine of about 1200 years old, situated at Baijnath, in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. This temple, built of stone in Shikhara style, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the oldest Shiva temples in the country, believed to be built by the Pandavas.

Baijnath, the erstwhile capital of Kiratas, was earlier known as ‘Kirgram’. The Sanskrit inscriptions in Sharada script found on the stone slabs of the temple stand testimony to this fact.

The temple is a unique blend of fine sculpture and exquisite architecture. The four artistic big pillars supporting the roof of the mandap is a delightful sight.

Shivratri, held here in the snow covered Dhauladhar ranges, draws thousands of pilgrims from all over India.

Baijnath Shiva Temple is 36 km east of Kangra. It can be easily accessed by bus from Kangra and Dharamsala.
