Narnaul, an ancient town, is the district headquarters of
Mahendragarh District in
Haryana. Strewn with legends, Narnaul's origin and name are still cloaked in mystery.
According to legends, the origin of Narnaul dates back to the Mahabharat period and it was then known as 'Nar Rashtra'. Another legend is that about 900 years ago, the lions roamed here and Narnaul got its name from 'Nahar-haul' meaning 'the abode of lions'. There is also a belief that Narnaul is named after Narlaun, the wife of Raja Launkaran.
Sher Shah Suri - one of the benevolent rulers of India - is believed to have born here. A mint was established here during the rule of Akbar. After the fall of the Mughals, Narnaul was taken over by the Rajputs and it was later handed over to the ruler of Patiala.
Points of interest in the vicinity include Jal Mahal, Chor gumbad, Triploia Darwaza, Chhatta Rai Mukand Das and Mirza Ali Jan’s Baoli. Ateli (16 km), Dhosi Hills (8 km), Kanti and Nasibpur (3 km) are among the surrounding places.
Narnaul Railway Station is on the Rewari-Bikaner rail route. Located about 150 km from Delhi, Narnaul is well linked by road to other major cities such as Rewari and Charkhi Dadri.
