Rohtak District lies in the south-east of
Haryana and covers an area of 1,668 sq km.
Rohtak town is the district headquarters. The name Rohtak is believed to be a corruption of Rohtashgarh. The name is also linked with the
Mahabharat in connection with the campaign of
Nakula, the
Pandava warrior.
Excavations in this region reveal the existence of
Indus valley civilization.
Agriculture is the major occupation and main crops are bajra, jawar, rice, cotton, sugarcane, wheat, barley, gram, and other pulses. The Gaokaran tank complex, an old and mythical tank with ghats on three sides, include temples of
Lord Shiva, Devi and Lord Hanuman; a park and a baradari. Asthal Bohar, Meham and Gajjak are other important places to visit.
