Kauravas

Kaurava is a Sanskrit word meaning the descendants of King Kuru, ancestor of many of the characters of the great epic Mahabharata. Gandhari, wife of Dhritarashtra, wished to have a hundred sons. By the boon granted by Sage Veda Vyasa, to fulfill her wish, she became pregnant. Gandhari didn’t deliver for two years and at last she gave birth to a lump of flesh. The sage cut the lump into hundred and two pieces, and these lumps eventually developed into a hundred boys, and a girl, commonly known as Kauravas. The first and the eldest son was Duryodhana and the only sister was Dushala. All the male Kauravas, except Yuyutsu, were killed in the gory Kurukshetra war, which they waged with their cousins, the Pandavas. Yuyutsu, also called Vikarna, was a son of King Dhritarashtra, born to a Vaishya wife. Yuyutsu was thus half brother of the Kauravas and was famed for his sense of justice. He was the only one who crossed over to the Pandava side during the Kurukshetra war and was the sole one among Dhritarashtra's sons to survive the war.
