Ahirs are settled in
Mahendragarh District and the neighbouring district of
Gurgaon and the
Jhajjar tehsil of
Rohtak District. They claim to have descended from the Yadav tribe, the clan of
Lord Krishna. They are hardworking agriculturists. By nature they are similar to the
Jats and have a number of
gotras like the Jats. But they differ from the jats in language. Ahirs practice widow-remarriage which is not allowed among the
Rajputs.
